Restore Your Smile With a Crown

Do you want to restore your smile with a crown? We’re proud to offer outstanding crown and bridge treatment to patients in Plymouth.

Cover Your Damaged Tooth

There are many reasons why you may need to restore your tooth with a crown or bridge, and Boger Dental is here to help.

Our high-quality prosthetic crowns and bridges are made from porcelain, zirconia, gold, porcelain fused to metal. We also use ceramic crowns from e.Max.

A dental crown is a custom-made artificial tooth cap that completely covers a chipped, cracked or damaged tooth. The tooth-shaped “cap” placed over a tooth to restore its shape and size and improve its appearance.

When cemented into place, the crown fully encases the visible portion of a tooth above the gum line.

Crowns can be made from many different materials. All-ceramic crowns are milled out of blocks of solid porcelain to match the shade and color of your tooth.

Dental crowns are most often a restoration procedure for teeth needing more structural support and long-lasting protection for decay.

The Dental Crown Process

1 Prepare Your Tooth

First, your dentist at Boger Dental will assess your dental issue to determine the type of dental crown that will best meet your needs. Then we’ll prepare your damaged tooth by shaving off the enamel and reshaping the tooth in preparation for the added thickness of the tooth cap.

We’ll send impressions of your teeth before and after your tooth is shaped to the dental lab, where they fashion your permanent dental crown.

2 Permanent Dental Crown

After your tooth is prepared and your impressions are taken, we give you a temporary crown made of acrylic or stainless steel to wear until your permanent dental crown is finished.

Once the permanent cap is bonded over your damaged tooth, all you have to do is practice good oral hygiene.

Advantages of Dental Crowns

Tooth Support

While dental veneers only conceal the front of a tooth, dental crowns cover the entire damaged tooth. It’s a more effective way to restore the functionality and strength of a tooth.

That’s pretty important when you consider that up to 150-200 lbs. of pressure is put on your teeth while you chew.

Long-Lasting Solution

Dental crowns are designed to last several years when accompanied by good oral hygiene. On average, they last at least ten years, but generally much longer depending on the type of crown and oral health of the patient.

Tooth Preservation

Dental crowns seal the damaged teeth off from bacteria in the saliva that can cause teeth to deteriorate. They can also hold together cracked teeth, preserving their functionality.

Choosing Your Dental Crown

These are the basic types of dental crowns which are composed of different materials:

  • All-ceramic crowns
  • Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns
  • Gold alloy crowns

Each type of crown is best suited to a specific area of your mouth, in addition to aesthetic considerations and how strong they need to be.

At your initial consultation, we’ll assess your situation and decide together what type of dental crown can do the most to enhance your smile.

All-Ceramic Crowns or All-Porcelain Crowns

Benefits
  • Translucent quality makes them the most natural-looking
  • Metal-free
  • Great for front and back teeth because they're most aesthetically pleasing
  • Work well in small spaces
Drawbacks
  • None

Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal Crowns

Benefits
  • Metal core makes them stronger and more durable
  • Most aesthetically pleasing choice next to the all-ceramic crown
  • Strength and esthetics combined into one crown make it more versatile
Drawbacks
  • Metal rim can be exposed as gums recede
  • Wear on opposing teeth
  • Porcelain can chip or break
  • Metal core decreases the natural translucent look of the tooth

Gold Alloy Crowns

Benefits
  • Provide support and durability
  • Long-lasting
  • A great choice for posterior teeth or those who grind and clench their teeth
Drawbacks
  • Less aesthetically pleasing because completely composed of metal
  • Not as popular because they do not look as natural
